Netizens have retrieved an old tweet Bashir Ahmad shared declaring his support of the death penalty for blasphemy.
This came after the former special assistant on Digital Communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari berated Islamic scholars for not being vocal on the issue of banditry in many parts of the North.
His tweet was not well received as Nigerians reminded him that he has also supported the use of violence in defence of religion.
Ahmad denied this, writing: “Really? Show me where.”
And Nigerians presented a tweet he made in 2015 that reads: “I can’t pretend or keep silent. I support the death penalty for BLASPHEMY. That’s my belief and I do not and will never support #SaveKanoNine.”
Recall that on Thursday, 26th June 2015, a Sharia court in Kano sentenced nine people to death after finding them guilty of blasphemy. This birthed the hashtag #SaveKanoNine as people called for their death sentence to be overturned. However, Bashir Ahmad supported the death sentence.
X users are now reminding him of his ‘’belief” several years later.
